چکیده

This thesis studied the design techniques of low phase noise and wideband microwave voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) used for point-to-point radio applications. First, basic oscillator theories as well as different technologies were reviewed. Then two Cband MMIC VCOs were designed in a commercial InGaP HBT foundry process with different topologies, namely the balanced Colpitts and the balanced Clapp. The circuits were simulated with a commercial harmonic balance simulator and the designs were optimized for the best phase noise performance by studying the implication of various design parameters, such as tank quality factors, transistor current density, feedback capacitor ratio and etc. Simulation results show over 10% tuning range for both topologies and a phase noise of -122 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset for the balanced Clapp, 10 dB superior to that of the balanced Colpitts, owing to a higher current excitation.

A New Ultra-Wideband Low Noise Amplifier With Continuous Gain Control

This paper presents a new variable gain low noise amplifier (VG-LNA) for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications. The proposed VG-LNA uses a common-source (CS) with a shunt-shunt active feedback as an input stage to realize input matching and partial noise cancelling. An output stage consists of a gain-boosted CS cascode and a gain control circuit that moves the high resonant frequency to higher freq...

A Wideband Low-Phase-Noise CMOS VCO

A CMOS VCO has been designed and fabricated in a commercial 0.25 m CMOS process. Using a combination of switched binary-weighted capacitors and standard varactors, this VCO achieves a 28% tuning range with a control voltage ranging from 0-2 V, while maintaining a tuning sensitivity of less than 75 MHz/V over its entire frequency range. Compact choke inductors are used in place of resistors to p...
